The Sounds of Happiness

It is very difficult when you have a child who cries all the time. I'm not talking about the occasional fit or terrible twos. A crier. Veronica has always been such a child. I'm not sure if it was a learned behavior or otherwise. As a baby, she cried A LOT. We suspected she had reflux and assumed she would grow out of it. She hated noise. People. Lights. She cried every where we went. As she got older, the tears continued, but for other reasons. The slightest mishap would send her over the edge and she would let you know if something wasn't just right. A banana that broke in two pieces was THE END OF THE WORLD. Spoon falls on the floor OH MY GOODNESS. Heaven forbid if a toy fell out of her hands. And so forth. One day I started to tally how many time she cried and after an hour I had gotten to about 15 times and quit. Eventually I caught on to her triggers and did whatever craziness I had to as prevention (don't ask.) Anything to avoid more crying. Yes, we probably babied her a lot.

And of course, there was Valerie. Veronica was in constant competition with Valerie. Roni wants so badly to keep up with her big sister, which isn't always possible. "I want to be the leader" she'd wail every. single. night. after bath time. On and on the daily battles went. And I think she learned by crying, she'd get the attention she craved.

I don't know what it is - maybe it's school or dancing or just being away from Valerie. Maybe it's having two days at home alone. Maybe she's enjoying her new found independence. But Veronica has changed SO much in the past two months. The tears are still there, but less frequent and for a shorter duration. Triggers that once sent her over the edge bring fits of laughter. Something falls on the floor brings giggles. Getting in the car - her skirt has to be "just so" over her knees and the seat belt just right across her dress. Countless times I have heard heart wrenching sobs of "My dress not right!!!" as we backed down the driveway.

Now I'm greeted with "My dress not right!! Silly Momma!!" And giggles.

And as we back out the driveway, I hear ever so softly. "Momma, I so happy."

Me too, Doodlebug.

All Aboard!!!

Today I took Val and Roni to see "Choo Choo Soul" at the Houma Civic Center. We had front row seats and had a GREAT time! The show was pretty simple - no huge props, no smoke and mirrors, no flashy lights. It was two performers on a blank stage, which I admit is a bit unusual. I have to wonder why there wasn't a backdrop - train or otherwise?! I don't think it was a Disney production though - there was no "Disney Presents" or Disney anything mentioned, other than "As seen on Playhouse Disney." And besides, if it had been, it probably would not have come to Houma and tickets would have been more than $12.50!!! I know a few people were disappointed that it wasn't a big flashy Disney show, but we really enjoyed it. The performers actually had to entertain all by themselves. It was all about the songs and dancing. (And Shhh but I actually like Genevieve's voice and some or most of her songs!)

After the show four moms and seven kids braved Pepper's Pizza for a yummy lunch. Val and Roni were so happy to see their friends today.

The B list

A while back I was invited by email on Facebook to a baby shower. (I had an appointment that day at the same time, so I was unable to attend.)

It came up in random conversation today and I learned that the hostess handmade invitations and sent them out. Apparently she took a lot of time and made really cute invitations for the special event.

But only select people received the pretty handmade invitations.

The rest of us (me) got a "Hey, I'm having a baby shower for XXXX. Hope you can come." on FB.

So I guess I was on the "B" list.

Things kids say....

Valerie's 'big girl' dance class plays a lot of bubble gum pop music instead of the baby songs she was used to. Valerie hasn't really been exposed to much of that, except for Hannah Montana and the few videos shown on the Disney channel. (It's coming, I know.)

Unfortunately, this is her new fav song. Thanks dance class.

After she heard it a few times, Valerie asked me, "Who's singing that?? Is it Simon? It sounds like Simon."

Oh Valerie, if you only knew.

Yay Val!

Last week Valerie's teacher sent home a letter inviting us to attend an awards ceremony. Valerie had been chosen as student of the month in her class!!! I was SO excited for her. Her first month of real school and she's getting an award?! Her very first award! What an awesome accomplishment. Today Clint, my Dad, and I went to school to surprise her. Valerie had NO idea anything special was happening today. The announcement was made over the PA and all the names read, then the students went to the cafeteria to receive their award. Valerie told me she couldn't stop smiling! I'm not sure she quite understood what was going on or what the award was for. I'm so proud of my little girl!

The Cat in the Hat

The Cat in the Hat
Imagine That
Oh the trouble he caused
Oh my, oh drat!

To our home from the school
for a single night, not two
The littlest one wanted him
The biggest one withdrew

The crying, the yelling
He brought to our dwelling
Over a stuffed cat in a hat
I've had enough of that

What are they thinking?
What are they drinking?
To send home this delusion
that causes such confusion

Not sure what we learned
I can't wait until he's returned
This furry chaotic creature
must go back to the teacher!

Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day is always a big holiday in my hometown of Morgan City. It's the big Shrimp and Petroleum Festival. (Yes, we know it sounds odd and yes it is a bit ironic with the oil spill disaster.) We took the girls to the festival both Friday and Saturday. They had an absolute blast. They love stuff like that and so do I actually. The only two times in my life I did not partake in the festival was when I was pregnant. For the first time in years we were able to stay and listen to one of the bands. We've tried but the kids had no interest in that part - it was always too loud or they were too tired. This year we took them to the playground. They stayed busy on the equipment and we could see and hear the band on the other side of the park. Saturday we went back and hit the children's village, fair rides, and made a quick pass through the craft show. Fair rides and sno-balls ~ fun for all! Amazingly a "cool" front passed and temps were bearable and actually quite comfortable in the shade.

Monday we barbecued and had friends over. It was probably our last swimming weekend since it's time to take down the pool. All was well until Veronica decided to get sick!! I was worried she had picked up the stomach virus going around, but it hasn't happened again so I guess it was one of those kid things.

Valerie woke up from a (rare) nap yesterday and thought it was the next morning. It was hilarious! She kept asking if she had eaten dinner or gotten ready for bed. I told her we could go outside to play and she asked "Don't I have school?" She didn't believe me when I told her it was still Monday!!!

Hope everyone had a good holiday weekend...
