The band kid

While Veronica and I were off on our All-State Honor Choir adventure....

Valerie had a full week of daily band practice as the big finale was approaching - Louisiana Showcase of Marching Bands State competition in Lafayette, LA.  Earlier in the month, there was some band drama at a local competition and issues with the show. After that incident, major parts of  marching show was re-worked.  In just three weeks, they re-learned several major segments of the show.  The music stayed the same, but they added more visuals and changed parts of the drill completely.

Clint and Valerie left very early Saturday morning for the competition. All 30+ bands perform and are scored, then the top ten are chosen.  Those ten perform again to vie for the grand champion spot.  The rival school, Lafayette High, has won the championship title 16 (yes SIXTEEN) years in a row.  That is a long, long winning streak!!

I was on pins and needles all day.  Luckily I was able to catch videos of their performances on Facebook.

For the first round:  (1 is superior)
Band - 1
Auxiliary - 1
Percussion - 1
Drum Major - 1 1st in Auxiliary
1st in Percussion

Class AAA 1st place State Champions
Most Outstanding Percussion

That put them in the top ten and they were performing again at 10:30pm.

I fell asleep about 9:30 (so tired from our choir trip.)  I woke up about 11pm and checked my phone.  No text messages, so I checked Facebook and the award ceremony was being live streamed by several people.

They counted down to the top two spots.  It was between us, Central Lafourche and Lafayette.

Reserve Grand Champions:  Lafayette High

Grand Champions:  CENTRAL LAFOURCHE!!  (pronounced La-Foosh for everyone north of here!)

The band and crowd went nuts.  I was so excited I couldn't go back to sleep.  After sixteen years, somebody finally beat Lafayette and it was US!  This is a huge, HUGE win for the band and the school.  And for all the other band kids in the area.  It has been all over the news.  There has been a huge outpouring of support from all over - newspaper articles, free pizza parties, and endless congratulations from businesses.  These kids put in about 400 hours of practice and this is definitely a moment in history.   I'm so glad Valerie has the chance to be part of such an awesome music program.  I can't wait to see what happens next marching season!

Here is the winning performance by our State Champions!  Central Lafourche Trojan Lancer Band and "The Last Straw."
