It's no secret Louisiana is known for food.  Mardi Gras and food!   A Louisiana favorite is french market donuts covered in powdered sugar also called beignets.  It's basically a fried donut sprinkled with powdered sugar.  You can find them in various coffee and donut shops around, but the most famous place is Cafe Du Monde in New Orleans. I haven't been there in many years.

Beignets are actually pretty easy to make at home.  There are tons of from scratch recipes out there.  The easiest way is to buy Cafe Du Monde beignet mix.  If you find yourself in New Orleans, keep in mind the beignet mix is sold to tourists in the French Quarter at outrageous prices.  I've seen it for $15-20 a box!  You can buy it at any local grocery store (Walmart, Rouses) for a few bucks.

If you don't have access the mix, a cheat is to use canned biscuits.  Just cut into fourths, fry in a couple of inches of hot oil until browned, and sprinkle with powdered sugar.  It's not quite the same, but it'll do in a pinch.

We love beignets around here but it's not something I make very often.   Sugar and carb overload!

  1. Many years ago, my husband and brother visited there and fell in love with Cafe du Monde. They loved the coffee too!

  2. I love beignets! I've been to New Orleans twice in recent years and always go to Cafe du Monde for my beignet fix. (The first time I was in New Orleans was in 1976, but I didn't know about beignets then, alas.)

  3. They look delicious! Worthy of at least a taste in my book!
