My favorite things - the Putz house

I've decided to do a series of Holidailies posts about some of my favorite Christmas things around my home.

This simple little cardboard house is one of my favorite things.  My Mom had one exactly like this and would put it out every Christmas.  Hers had a light inside of it that would flash off and on.  The windows are red plastic and glowed with each flash. I would turn off all the lights and plug in the house and just watch it blink. I loved the little house and would sit in the dark and stare at it often, imagining a family inside and a little girl just like me waiting for Santa!!  It seemed like the perfect little Christmas house to me.

One December after I was married and on my own, I asked my Mom if she still had it and she said no, she had just recently thrown it away because it was all beat up.  Thanks to the magic of the Internet and eBay, I was able to learn it was a Putz house from the 1950s  I found the exact one on eBay for around $20 and HAD to have it.  So now I have my very own perfect little Christmas house.

The name for Putz houses evolved from the German word “putzen” which means to clean or to decorate. And the name was acquired by little houses that were placed around the nativity scene for Christmas decorations in the early 1900s. Yes, these adorable little houses have been around for about 100 years
