Hello, summer!

It sure doesn't feel like the last day of school, but here we are.  Both kids went to school today.  They haven't done any class work in a week and have been watching movies.  Valerie decided she wanted to go afterall to play Mario Kart on the Switch with her friends.  Veronica wasn't about to miss her last day of middle school.  My poor girl came home just sobbing...   tough day of goodbyes for her.  She doesn't like change and next year will be a big change.  Roni even told me she wishes she could get up at 6am tomorrow and go to school!  It reminded me of when they were in elementary school.  Every year on the last day they'd both run off the bus crying their eyes out because it was over.  I probably have the only kids who cried because it was summer break!!

It's tradition to have a cookie cake on the last day of school.  I used to get them pool toys/floats or pool towels but since we no longer have a pool, they got money.  I also always dig out their school memory books so they can fill it out all the questions for the year and put all their awards inside. (I still have my school days book somewhere and all of my report cards!)

So far we don't have much planned for summer.  Valerie has to go back to school for part of this week for the start of marching band camp.  Then she has June off, and mid July through November is non-stop marching band, or so we hope. I also hope to have her driving by the time school starts, so we'll be practicing a lot.  She's doing quite well but still has a ways to be driving test ready.  Veronica was invited to attend a dancing competition in Biloxi, MS, so we may try to plan a mini-vacation around that. Veronica is also doing a theater camp in July.  The rest of the summer will be pretty low key I guess.  I know it's going to fly by and August will be here before we know it..........

  1. Tears? On the last day? I don't think any of my kids ever batted an eye at the end of a school year. Your kids are devoted students.

School memory books? Cookie cake? Money? I nominate you for mom of the year right here and now. You are one organized mama. My high schoolers asked Curly this morning why she was awake so early. Meanies. She still has over a week of school and they are done. I admit that I was like, OH THAT'S RIGHT YOU HAVE SCHOOL. Not on my A game. And certainly not on my here's-your-memory-book-A-game. Happy summer!

    1. Hahaha, I know - who cries on the last day of school??? They even came home crying once or twice for Christmas break?? Who cries because there's no school for Christmas?!? lol!! It's funny because they will remind me to get their memory books out for the last day so they can fill them out!

  2. That is so cute about the girls in their earlier grades crying at the end of the school year! So sweet!! Its refreshing to hear kids who like school! My son was just the opposite lol. In fact one year on the first day of school, mind you after we dropped his sister off at junior high and he was still in elementary school, after he saw yellow school buses and kids walking to school, he said to me "mom is this really the first day of school?" Your girls are real gems!

Goodbyes are so hard at that age for Veronica. Are some of her friends going to the same high school she will be at? But then of course they might not get any classes together or if there is more than one lunch period might not get the same lunch period, etc.

I'm sure summer will be a great one for you all! Enjoy it!

And wow with those school memory books! What a great organized mom you are!! I have the kids' report cards and some special papers but nothing as detailed as you have!! WTG mom!

    1. Yes, all of her friends will be going to the same high school. None of them are taking honors classes though, so the only chance they will be in the same class is PE or electives. The elementary/middle schools are small, about 50-75 kids each grade, and only 5 minutes from home. The high school is about 2000 kids, is about 20-30 mins away, so it's going to be very different.

  4. It's nice to have end of school traditions like that! Plus their school year books will be such a treasure to them when they are older! Sounds like a busy summer ahead!

  7. I empathize with your kids about the end of the school year. I always felt a little sad about it. I was in marching band and I remember how much/work and fun it was to practice during the summer. Seemed special, in a good way of course.

  8. Your girls are so good and studious. I hope they have a great summer though and I'm sure they'll be looking forward to the fall. I love that you have the school days books AND you have them fill them out; this is a great way to preserve some memories.
